Executive summary

Matthew is responsible for all aspects of multistate tax consulting, planning, and compliance within Grant Thornton. Matthew currently leads the overall tax practice for the Atlantic Coast Region, which includes the Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania areas. He also serves as overall firm or tax relationship leader on some of the Grant Thornton’s major clients. Previously, Matt served as Grant Thornton’s co-national leader of State and Local Tax (SALT).  Matthew was also previously the SALT practice leader of both Grant Thornton’s Atlantic Coast Region and Grant Thornton’s Northeast Region, which included the New York, New Jersey, and New England areas.

 

Prior to Grant Thornton’s acquisition of LECG SMART in 2011, Matthew led LECG SMART’s national SALT practice, which included professionals based in the Atlanta, Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia areas. Matthew previously spent 10 years with PwC.

Professional qualifications and memberships

Matthew is immediate past of the PICPA, representing approximately 17,000 PICPA members and has served for years on the Board of Directors and Executive Council of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA). Matthew previously served as President of the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the PICPA, representing nearly 10,000 members.  Matthew has for approximately 20 years been the editor of the quarterly SALT column and a member of the Editorial Board of the Pennsylvania CPA Journal.

 

Matthew served for several years on AICPA Council.  He was an adjunct professor at Philadelphia University’s Masters of Taxation program for approximately 10 years, teaching State and Local Taxes. He was appointed by the City of Philadelphia Mayor’s Task Force on Tax Policy and Economic Competitiveness in 2009, and again to the Mayor and City Council’s Tax Reform Working Group in 2021. Tax Reform Commission in has been a long-standing member of the City of Philadelphia Department of Revenue Commissioner’s Tax Advisory Committee, serving at least the past five Commissioners. He also has served on the Bucks County, PA Tax Collection Committee since the formation in 2009, and on LaSalle University’s Accounting Advisory Board.  Matthew is a frequent author, speaker and conference chair/committee member at many conferences, including for the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT), Council on State Taxation (COST) and Tax Executives Institute (TEI).  Matthew also has served for years on the Advisory Board for LaSalle University Accounting Department.
