The IRS has updated its Modernized e-File (MeF) program to allow taxpayers to electronically file several types of amended employment tax returns.
The MeF program now accepts the following forms for amending/adjusting certain previously filed employment tax returns:
- An amended Form 940 — Employer’s Annual Federal Unemployment (FUTA) Tax Return
- Form 941-X — Adjusted Employer’s Quarterly Federal Tax Return or Claim for Refund
- Form 943-X — Adjusted Employer’s Annual Federal Tax Return for Agricultural Employees or Claim for Refund
- Form 945-X — Adjusted Annual Return of Withheld Federal Income Tax or Claim for Refund
The MeF program allows certain businesses to file select tax returns online. Form 944-X, Adjusted Employer’s Annual Federal Tax Return or Claim for Refund, was not added to the online filing program.
The following forms for initially filing employment tax returns were already available for filing on MeF Forms 940, 941, 941-SS, 943, 944, and 945.
