Design, build and manage migration
Scenario
Disparate data centers
A multinational pharmaceutical company needed to consolidate multiple physical data centers into one data center with a private cloud environment.
The company wanted a partner that could lead the IT Infrastructure build-out of a new centralized facility. The build scope included the design, procurement, installation, configuration and qualification of all WAN, LAN, and SAN environments to support consolidated production loads, while virtualizing physical hardware into a private cloud environment. The migration scope included creating and managing a migration plan to shut down and consolidate two local data centers and multiple ad-hoc “data closets” at manufacturing facilities, along with physical migrations.
Approach
Physical and cloud consolidation
The Grant Thornton team coordinated with the company’s IT department to develop the requirements and design for the LAN, WAN and SAN infrastructure environment, facilitating procurement for all infrastructure assets. The team also coordinated with IT to design the private cloud infrastructure requirements.
The Grant Thornton team surveyed applications and servers, developing an inventory assessment, infrastructure requirements, application-to-server mapping, migration strategy, communication plan and RFPs for third-party migration resources.
During the migration, the team coordinated timelines with stakeholders, managing multiple migration waves, managed the overall project budget and helped to address any PO or payment issues.
Result
Unified power
The Grant Thornton team managed $50 million in the project budget and capital expenditures to deliver the new on-premise modular Tier III, 10,000 sq. ft. LEED Gold certified Data Center with multiple, redundant MPLS, Internet and MAN circuits.
The project delivered a fully qualified private hosting environment that supported production workloads from day one. The team completed infrastructure integration for the company’s global processes and standards, fulfilling a key milestone of the client’s Global Data Center strategy.
Now complete, the project is expected to deliver more than $16 million in annual synergy savings and cost avoidance over the next 5 years.
