Risk is rewarded at Grant Thornton

My interest in accounting sparked during my undergraduate years at Loyola University Chicago. I took a few courses and something just clicked, so I dove in headfirst and went on to complete bachelor’s and master’s degrees. When it came time to pursue a full-time role, I interviewed with some safe options — but I wanted something that took me off a predictable path: where I could take risks, be myself and play an active role in clients’ wins. Here, I found people didn’t just talk about hands-on experiences and flexibility — they walked the walk. Since then, I’ve experienced this is anything but cookie-cutter accounting.

I’m pushed to take risks

I've connected with amazing leaders who've shaped my path. One partner, Melanie Krygier, prompted one of the biggest risks I've taken: moving from Chicago to San Francisco after six years at the firm and 13 years in the Windy City to expand our transaction advisory practice. It meant leaving my comfort zone, but it’s allowed me to grow — it's fast-tracking my promotion readiness and strengthening my client relationships.

I have freedom to work differently

I’ve always valued my teams’ flexibility to do work when and where it makes sense, while always meeting clients’ needs. As a powerlifter, I sometimes work until 3 or 4 p.m., hit the gym, then finish tasks from home. When I have ice hockey games at 11 p.m., I may work late and start later the next day. This balance allows me to pursue engaging work without compromising life outside the office.

I lead authentically

My mentors taught me to lead with a reasonable and flexible approach, which has helped my own team grow. Moving to SF also influenced my leadership style by connecting me to a vibrant LGBTQ+ community. Before Grant Thornton, I wasn’t comfortable being fully myself at work. Since my move, I’ve become a national leader for our LGBTQ+ Alliance business resource group. Now, I lead by example — and help others feel seen.
