Scott Thompsett

 

 

 

Executive summary

 

Scott has over 23 years of experience in the higher education and not-for-profit industry and has been a member of the Grant Thornton Not-For-Profit practice for five years. Prior to joining Grant Thornton, Scott managed Deloitte’s Tri-State Tax-Exempt, Non-For-Profit and Healthcare Practice.

Scott has substantial experience with the entire spectrum of exempt organizations: health care systems, private foundations, public sector, higher education, HMOs, business leagues, electric cooperatives and other public charities. In his day-to-day function, Scott supervises and services over fifty not-for-profit clients, providing guidance on issues ranging from tax compliance, unrelated business income, tax controversy, fringe benefit and payroll reviews, self-dealing, private inurement and intermediate sanctions.

Scott has been instrumental in providing thought leadership for the National Not-For-Profit practice, authoring whitepapers on private foundations, unrelated business income, and other topics impacting non-profit governance. He has also engineered training modules and facilitated learning sessions at the National Tax Conference.

Scott services a diverse cross-section of not-for-profit clientele: The Robin Hood Foundation, National Audubon, Natural Resources Defense Council, the Simons Foundation, the Doris Duke Foundation, Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York and Columbia University, just to name a few. In addition, Scott is an integral part of our audit function, providing tax provision and FIN-48 reviews for clients throughout the nation.

Scott participates in various Grant Thornton Leadership Committees, including the Private Foundation, Museums and Cultural Institutions and Higher Education service lines.
