Finding workforce solutions in the hospitality industry

The COVID-19 pandemic forced hospitality businesses to take a re-evaluation of almost every aspect of their businesses, including workforce issues. When vaccinations became commonplace in 2021, pent-up desires to work elsewhere exploded in the Great Resignation, and many hospitality businesses experienced significant difficulties in attracting and retaining talent.

Alex Rhodes, Grant Thornton’s national leader of its Hospitality and Restaurants practice, spoke with Derek Fournier, vice president of training for Sonesta Hotels, about his business’s management of company talent retention. Sonesta has enjoyed a period of significant growth in the past few years, in contrast to many competitors, and that success brought added pressures in maintaining high-quality staffing in their locations.

In our podcast, Fournier and Rhodes discuss how a commitment to a “culture of caring” and an emphasis on open training in a wide variety of career possibilities helped make Sonesta a place where employees wanted to work and where they wanted to stay.
