Transforming healthcare systems through humanity and respect

A new transformational healthcare model, “Pathway to Proven Performance: Living and Leading with Love,” rejects top-down command-and-control solutions and centers on humanity, respect and trust. The three core components of the model are: 1. the belief that everyone in the organization is empowered to improve value, 2. a structure and culture that encourages the free flow of ideas and 3. the development of disciplined management and accountability systems.

In this podcast, Grant Thornton National Healthcare Growth Leader Claudia Douglass discusses this model with Dr. Peter Pronovost, Chief Quality and Clinical Transformation Officer at the University Hospitals Health System in Ohio, with whom she has partnered with on previous healthcare transformation initiatives. Using the specific experience of a University Hospitals patient with multiple readmissions, Dr. Pronovost demonstrates the need for, and the benefits of, building love into the care model.

While transforming a healthcare system to a value mindset that incorporates the power of love may sound like a “soft” strategy, Dr. Pronovost presents hard data that it produces impressive results. Under the “Pathway to Proven Performance” model, UH’s annual Medicare costs were reduced 33%, surgical length of stay was cut from 6.2 days to 2.5 and mortality from sepsis was reduced 70%.

Hear how building a care model around love and a culture of shared accountability helped University Hospitals significantly reduced hospital costs and enhanced quality of care.
