Erik Lioy is the national managing partner of Grant Thornton LLP’s Forensic Advisory Services practice. Prior to his national leadership role, Lioy held local and regional leadership roles within Grant Thornton.
Lioy has over 20 years of experience serving clients across industry sectors. Prior to joining Grant Thornton, he worked for a forensic accounting firm in Pittsburgh. He has also held senior financial management positions in the technology and construction sectors.
Recognized locally and nationally, Lioy has served as an expert witness, arbitrator, court-appointed expert and leader for complex investigations. He has provided expert testimony regarding fraud, damages and the application of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) in numerous business disputes. He also has extensive experience working on purchase price and other post-acquisition disputes as a neutral arbitrator and testifying expert witness.
Lioy has led investigations of financial statement fraud for public companies, corruption and kickback schemes, health care billing fraud, and construction and real estate fraud. His investigations have led to financial restatements, criminal convictions and successful recovery of losses from insurance companies and perpetrators.
His dedication to the profession was recently recognized when he was awarded the Dr. D. Larry Crumbley Award for Outstanding Service by Pfeiffer University. In addition, Lioy serves on the advisory board for the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, University of New Haven, and is a frequent guest at professional events.
Lioy is very active in his community and has served on the board of directors for several not-for-profit organizations that serve the children of the greater Charlotte-Mecklenburg community. He is currently serving on the board of MeckEd, which works to ensure the children in Mecklenburg County have access to an excellent public education.
