Supporting the Windy City with helping hands

Chicago Cares tree

Our involvement in the community is a natural extension of the importance placed on the continuous need for CLEARR (Collaboration, Leadership, Excellence, Agility, Respect and Responsibility.) Many of the inspiring people across our firm have been providing innovative, generous and resourceful services to Chicago organizations including:

Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon

Grant Thornton’s Chicagoland offices volunteered at the 22nd Annual Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon on Saturday, June 27. The Serve-a-thon is Chicago Cares’ largest single day of community service in Chicago, when more than 5,000 volunteers come together to make the city more vibrant. The Grant Thornton team partnered with Mesirow Financial, both volunteering at Gunsaulus Scholastic Academy, located in Brighton Park. With over 100 volunteers on the team, Grant Thornton and Mesirow affected 800+ students.

Volunteers applied fresh coats of primer in over 10 classrooms in preparation for future painting projects. Grant Thornton and Mesirow’s participation help saved Gunsaulus Scholastic thousands of dollars. Many thanks to the Grant Thornton Chicago Cares team: Ryan Rogina, Tiffany Lau, Daniel Ampon, Chris Chen, Mike Greco, Sara Hocking, Ethan Sooy and Warren Stippich.

Cristo Rey Jesuit High School
With over 10 years of dedication, Grant Thornton is proud to continue our support of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. In 2015, the firm hosted four Cristo Rey interns in the Chicago office. These talented students had the opportunity to experience the professional world and assist Grant Thornton with projects in all practices, including HR, Marketing, Audit, Tax and Advisory Services. Grant Thornton provides tuition aid in return for their hard work. Together, the Chicago office has committed over 200 hours in 2015.

In addition, Grant Thornton hosts workshops to prepare students for internship opportunities and mentors students on professional etiquette. Thanks to Tony Fuller, Melissa Stroner, Vic Guerrieri and Jeff Spero for their help in mentoring the Cristo Rey interns and allowing this partnership to flourish.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago
With five years of dedication, Grant Thornton has participated in both mentoring and sponsorship opportunities with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago. Thanks to Mickey Vaja, who currently sits on the executive board, our participation in events such as Bowl for Kids’ Sake and the annual BIG Bash have been phenomenal. Grant Thornton would like to congratulate Bob Achtstatter on his opportunity to interview with the BBBSMC Leadership Board.

Grant Thornton would also like to congratulate BBBSMC on their 100% graduation rate, with all Littles either attending college or enrolling in military services. Special thanks to Annette Christensen, Jim Maurer, Warren Stippich and Vince Tomkinson for making our involvement with BBBSMC possible.

Ladder Up
Grant Thornton is proud to partner with Ladder Up to provide free tax preparation assistance to low-income taxpayers in Chicago. In 2015, 18 Grant Thornton employees volunteered their time to the cause, preparing nearly 400 tax returns. Moreover, the Grant Thornton team dedicated more than 180 hours over the course of several months. Look for an email in the next few weeks about volunteering this spring.

In addition to our tax preparation volunteer work, Grant Thornton employees also attended Ladder Up’s 9th Annual Casino Night & Silent Auction in April. Many thanks to Brian Lucas and Ed Weaver for all of their hard work and coordination.

Greater Chicago Food Depository
Every year, Grant Thornton sets aside time to volunteer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository to help repack donated food and other products. This year, 150-plus volunteers dedicated over 600 hours in helping this initiative. Grant Thornton also participated in a virtual food drive, which raised $3,735, equaling 11,205 meals.

Big thanks to Vince Tomkinson, Mark Rogers, Dave Snodgrass, Maya Teleki, and all the volunteers who donated their time and effort to support this great cause.
