Thought leadership from our State and Local Tax professionals Nov. 3: Lori Stolly, Director, SALT – Cincinnati office, was quoted in the Bloomberg BNA Daily Tax Report article “House GOP tax plan draws protests over state impact” written by Che Odom. Lori discussed the ramifications of the proposal to limit the SALT deduction found in the recently released GOP tax reform bill.

Nov. 6: Jamie Yesnowitz, Principal, SALT -- National Tax Office Leader, was quoted in the Bloomberg BNA Daily Tax Report article “Will multiple briefs sway Supreme Court to take digital tax case” written by Ryan Prete. Jamie discussed the possibility of the U.S. Supreme Court weighing in on the South Dakota v. Wayfair online tax case.  

Nov. 6: Vito Cosmo, Managing Director, SALT – Philadelphia office, was quoted in the Bloomberg BNA Daily Tax Report article, “Nextel asks Pennsylvania Supreme Court in rehear case” by Leslie A. Pappas. Vito discussed the impact of Nextel requesting a rehearing of a case where the Pennsylvania Supreme Court declined to award a refund to Nextel after finding unconstitutional a flat-dollar cap on net loss carryover deductions applied to Nextel in 2007. 

Nov. 9: Jamie Yesnowitz, Principal, SALT -- National Tax Office Leader, was quoted in the Bloomberg BNA Daily Tax Report article “Congress members call for high court review of digital tax case” written by Ryan Prete. Jamie talked about how Congressional members were citing their own history of inaction on online taxation as a reason for the U.S. Supreme Court to address the issue. 

Nov. 9: Jamie Yesnowitz, Principal, SALT -- National Tax Office Leader, was quoted in the Bloomberg BNA Daily Tax Report article “Federal action on remote sales tax tied to mobile workforce bill” written by Che Odom. Jamie discussed how a federal solution addressing multiple state demanding sales and use taxes might be difficult because of the multiple constituencies involved. 

Nov. 14: Jamie Yesnowitz, Principal, SALT -- National Tax Office Leader, was quoted in the Bloomberg BNA Daily Tax Report article “Will Goodlatte’s retirement lead to federal digital tax solution?” written by Ryan Prete. Jamie said the retirement of Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., doesn’t change the likelihood that Congress will wait for the U.S. Supreme Court’s Wayfair decision before considering new remote-seller legislation.  

Nov. 20: Jamie Yesnowitz, Principal, SALT -- National Tax Office Leader, was quoted in the Bloomberg BNA Daily Tax Report article “Senate, House likely won’t tussle over tax plans: practitioner” written by Che Odom. Jamie was quoted on the potential state tax effect of the expensing provision in proposed federal tax reform legislation.

Meet Chris Oatis, a State and Local Tax Managing Director in the Orlando office Chris Oatis is a Managing Director in Grant Thornton’s Southeast Region SALT practice and is based in the Orlando office. Chris joined Grant Thornton in 2005 and has more than 11 years of focus on state and local tax, with an even longer experience in public accounting. At Grant Thornton, he also is a Business Record Repository Steward for the SALT Tax Business Line.

His SALT service area experience includes legal entity optimization, business expansion consulting, refund opportunity reviews, apportionment studies, nexus analyses, state audit and controversy assistance and ASC 740 preparation and documentation. He serves both public and privately held companies in industries as diverse as construction, retail, hospitality and technology.

Chris is a licensed CPA and a member of both the AICPA and the Florida institute of Certified Public Accountants, where he serves as the State Tax Section Vice Chair and State Conference Chair. He is a graduate of the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in finance and a master’s degree in taxation. He has been a guest speaker at the Tax Leadership Conference and the Vertex Exchange Conference and also has appeared on various webcasts.
