A nonprofit health system with more than 200 care sites and affiliates throughout central Indiana, Community Health Network’s full continuum of care integrates thousands of physicians; hundreds of specialty and acute care hospitals; and numerous surgery centers, home care services, MedChecks, and behavioral health and employer health services.

Community was planning a total overhaul of its finance infrastructure. The network sought to replace a siloed maze of disparate general ledger, costing, planning, supply chain and related third-party systems with a single set of integrated applications.
Before proceeding, Community needed to address data discrepancies across its network, including assorted charts of accounts, inconsistent service line and regional roll-ups, and multiple job code classifications. Without consistent data definitions and use, Community's leadership realized it would be impossible to capture measurements and share insights across the network. When building the integrated enterprise platform with standard business processes, data governance would be a critical cornerstone.
What the team did
Grant Thornton LLP implemented a holistic approach to manage key master data. Using Oracle’s Hyperion Data Relationship Management (DRM) application, the new solution:
- Defined all key chart values (dimensions) and hierarchies for entities, accounts, departments and regions
- Standardized job code classifications, eliminating hundreds of redundant job codes
- Established service line roll-ups, providing system-wide consistency and managing the shift to ICD-10 mappings
Initially, Grant Thornton helped establish a data governance process to impose control and increase visibility to the newly implemented financial systems. Over time, this governance approach has broadened within the health system to include weekly meetings to review and proactively plan for metadata changes.
The new solution resulted in a central repository that manages 20 custom dimensions and 51 hierarchies. DRM synchronizes Community’s wide range of Oracle solutions — as well as several clinical applications — and links to Community’s clinical warehouse, serving as a key enabler for service line reporting.
The DRM solution provides a strong foundation that will be expanded for years to come, incorporating new systems and additional master data elements.
