THE SITUATION Our client, the holding company for a portfolio of less-than-truckload (LTL) companies headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas, is a $5 billion public company with one of the largest, most comprehensive LTL networks in North America. The company had been relying on PeopleSoft as its enterprise resource planning (ERP) and human capital management (HCM) system since it was originally installed in the early 1980s. While it was still functional, the PeopleSoft platform required extensive support from IT, and had major customizations that made the ongoing support very difficult. Other factors of note included limited visibility into financial performance, cumbersome reporting, and far too many areas that relied on the involvement of a small and overburdened IT team to respond to hundreds of user requests. The client’s senior leadership knew they needed to explore alternatives that could provide better capabilities, increased visibility into financial performance and one version of the truth on which to base business decisions.

Services provided
Grant Thornton LLP became involved during the software selection phase and was chosen as the Oracle implementation firm of choice. Following a well-planned selection process, the client selected the Oracle Cloud platforms for ERP and HCM. Our team has successfully helped the client through the first phase of the program, which included the full life cycle of implementation and go-live for ERP Cloud — including the financial suite applications: general ledger, accounts payable, cash management, fixed assets and suite of reporting tools.

The next ongoing phase of the program includes the Cloud HCM project — including the HR suite applications: core HR, payroll, recruiting, talent management, compensation management and learning.


THE CHALLENGE
After concluding that the current PeopleSoft platform should be replaced, the company began a competitive selection process. This internally led initiative reviewed multiple vendor solutions as a part of a well-planned enterprise software selection process. As they learned during this process, they wanted to find a better approach to these ongoing issues — less IT support required, more frequent updates instead of waiting several years to upgrade, and relying on the vendors to keep hardware and infrastructure current. They set a pure cloud solution as a requirement.


WHAT THE TEAM DID
The client was receptive to migrating to the cloud, in part because of the upgrade challenges caused by years of customizations added to their existing on-premise application. The existing application was multiple versions behind and nearing the end of support. By switching to Oracle Cloud, all of their technical and infrastructure support takes place in the cloud, and requires no customization. The cloud-based solution enabled IT to focus on more value-added activities, and business users were empowered to take advantage of the capabilities and tools that enabled user-based support.

OUTCOMES
With the support of our experienced Grant Thornton team, our client succeeded in achieving a high adoption rate for the new ERP Cloud solution, despite its users being dispersed across the country. The adoption of the Oracle Cloud platform positions our client as a leader in an industry that tends to be behind the curve in adopting new technology. Moreover, in the continuing war for talent in the transportation industry, organizations that use leading-edge tools have an advantage in recruiting the best talent. With a cloud-based solution that continually adds new updates and capabilities, our client can stay current on their Oracle Cloud solutions without having to go through complicated, costly and labor-intensive upgrades.

Now that they are up and running with Oracle Cloud, the company’s resources are free to work on their other initiatives, enabling them to optimize other processes. For example, the financial analysis team has been able to shift its focus from consolidating materials and reports to providing deeper, actionable analysis. Based on the prompt, reliable data and richer business insights, our client is able to act more nimbly and make faster decisions.

These solutions position our client for growth and allow it to more easily adopt changes within its business, including a new services launch, the acquisition of new capabilities or other timely business opportunities. This journey to the cloud also positions our client to use other cloud-based applications. In fact, the company is currently rolling out the next phase of cloud applications with the Oracle HCM Cloud platform.
