Interns get shooting, teamwork tips at Hornets clinic

In addition to valuable advisory, tax and audit experience, interns in Grant Thornton LLP’s North Carolina offices gained a bonus education in hoops and teamwork.

Fifteen interns and each of their Grant Thornton buddies/mentors were invited to the Charlotte Hornets’ arena for a shooting clinic arranged by Grant Thornton and led by Dell Curry, who played in the NBA for 16 years and retired as the Hornets’ all-time leader in points and three-point field goals. He is currently a color commentator for the Hornets’ televised games and the father of two current NBA players, Stephen and Seth Curry.

Curry coached the intern-buddy teams on shooting and emphasized the necessity of quality in professional culture and teamwork.

The interns responded to their unique outing with enthusiasm. According to Bianca Reyes, Audit Services intern from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte: “The shooting clinic was a great way to meet new Grant Thornton staff, and we all got to share an experience we’ll never forget.” Marian Mercedes, Audit Services intern from North Carolina State University, said, “The shooting clinic was definitely one of the highlights of my internship. It was amazing to be able to learn from Dell Curry and play with him on the court.” She was appreciative of the presence of her buddy at work, as well as on the court: “My buddy was my go-to person for everything and anything. She was always checking up on me, and she made sure that I was getting the best experience out of my internship.”

The interns and buddies were impressed that Curry took the time to facilitate the clinic and describe the strong relationship between Grant Thornton and its client, the Hornets. The event underscored the genuine care Grant Thornton takes to create meaningful internships, the value our interns can see we provide as a professional services firm and the connections to be made by starting a career with us.

Two of the interns have extended their internship through the end of April to assist with a specific project, and another will return for a second internship this summer. All of them will be extended associate offers upon the completion of their internship.
