CFOs shift focus to strategist, change agent roles through COVID crisis

Changes in focus and approach to innovation likely to continue as they shape their new normal

Business side view When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, CFOs shifted significantly more time to their strategist and change agent roles, delegating more responsibility for their guardian and provider roles. This shift was aligned with how most CFOs prefer to spend their time. As the pandemic continues and as CFOs work with their organizations to help design their new normal, this shift in focus will likely remain.

CFOs are also rethinking how they approach innovation. When we surveyed C-level executives last year, the majority indicated they would continue to invest in innovation even through a recession, yet when the COVID crisis hit, many innovation projects were put on hold. CFOs will have to look at new ways to innovate.
