Balancing strategic, cyber and operational risk

In December, 2017, NCMM surveyed 1,000 middle-market companies concerning risk. Coming on the heels of major hurricanes in Florida and Texas, as well as wildfires in California, they asked business about the likelihood, impact, recovery time and their readiness for:

  • Operational risks, such as natural disasters, port closures, strikes, facility shutdowns and other similar disruptions
  • Cyber risks, such as cyber breaches, data integrity issues, system downtime or compatibility issues and related disruptions
  • Strategic risks, such as industry consolidation, regulatory and economic changes, customers or suppliers going out of business, changes in ownership and similar disruptions

Of these categories of risk, strategic risk was the most likely—and the risk for which businesses reported they are the least prepared.
