On Oct. 11, 2017, the Cook County, Illinois, Board of Commissioners voted to repeal, effective Dec. 1, 2017, the Cook County Sweetened Beverage Tax Ordinance. The ordinance, more commonly known as the “Soda Tax” or “SBT,” has required the imposition of a $0.01 per ounce tax on sweetened beverages since Aug. 2, 2017. Cook County now joins a group of municipalities that have voted down or otherwise eliminated a soda tax, including New York City, Santa Fe, and Richmond, Calif.
