The SALT Midyear Report: Tracking Important Legislation and Litigation
Event Description
In the first half of 2022, a number of noteworthy developments involving state and local taxes (SALT) have taken place. The federal government’s funding of states to address the problem of the pandemic is driving state spending and tax cuts during this year’s legislative sessions. The proliferation of distinctive pass-through entity taxes designed to overcome the $10,000 federal cap on SALT deductions has continued, as taxpayers show growing interest in this trend. On the sales tax front, businesses and states are continuing to adapt to a post-Wayfair world. As for the corporate income tax, a growing number states are interpreting Public Law 86-272 narrowly in a post-pandemic economy. Finally, a number of important state tax opinions have been issued by courts in Texas, Massachusetts, and California. On July 19, members of Grant Thornton’s SALT – Washington National Tax Office will provide an overview of the states’ fiscal condition and what lies ahead given political and economic uncertainties, analyze important income and sales tax issues resolved in the states’ 2022 legislative sessions, and review important litigation involving SALT issues during the first half of 2022.
