A historic year for Public Policy

Grant Thornton’s Public Policy team has always worked to monitor and influence regulatory and statutory developments. But our activities took on a new importance this year as COVID-19 spread across the country, closing the economy and causing the government to take an expanded role in business and society.

Throughout the year, our Public Policy team monitored and analyzed pandemic-related legislation and regulations, including the CARES Act. This helped us advise clients on how to best negotiate the tough decisions they faced.

We also tapped into our firm’s relationships with key outside groups, including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. And we took advantage of our team’s personal relationships with key decision-makers on Capitol Hill — resulting in hands-on assistance and guidance to clients across the country.

Most notably, we helped our clients keep ahead of the government’s break-neck implementation of the Paycheck Protection Program, meant to thwart mass layoffs. By working with the Grant Thornton’s many subject-matter leaders, our Public Policy team was able to conduct hundreds of briefings throughout the pandemic.

And our work is far from done: We will continue to help our clients navigate the still unfolding pandemic and prepare for a future of economic and political unknowns, while advocating for their needs.
