Taxation of Exempts article: The Maze to Determine a Board Member's Independent Status
Laura Kenney, senior tax manager, and Peggy Bradshaw, senior tax manager, co-author this article featured in Taxation of Exempts. The article covers the different tests and requirements that determine if a board member is independent or not. Although some will find that determining the independence status of a voting member of a governing body simple and straightforward, many more will find it is a confusing and involved maze. As with any complex task, it is best not to underestimate the effort and time that will be required to complete it.

AGB Foundation Leadership Forum Presentation
Grant Thornton sponsored AGB’s Foundation Leadership Forum, held in Miami, FL, Jan 25 – 28. This presentation discussed the full spectrum of foundation issues and included plenary sessions to address fundamental issues of concern to all foundations. Peer breakout sessions, special workshops and breakouts in the endowment seminar focused to address the needs. Larry Ladd, Higher Education Practice Leader, hosted a special workshop on "Emerging Governance Practice". The seminar reviewed components of the revised Form 990 focusing on governance, outlined key policies addressed in the Form and discussed governance practices foundations should implement to conform to the emerging IRS governance standards.

Not-for-Profit CFO survey: Fall 2008
In a survey of chief financial officers and senior comptrollers in the not-for-profit industry, conducted by Grant Thornton LLP, 42 percent expect the economy to worsen over the next six months. More than 80 percent say employee benefit costs is their greatest pricing pressure, 62 percent say average CEO is overpaid. See the full survey results for additional findings.
