Maintaining tax-exempt status. Adapting new technologies. Influencing and responding to emerging legislation. Establishing board-governance best practices.
While not-for-profit organizations share many of the same challenges and opportunities faced by for-profit businesses, they must also address a whole host of unique regulatory and operational concerns. At Grant Thornton, our experienced professionals are fully versed in the needs of not-for-profit organizations and provide expert audit, tax and advisory services. Grant Thornton’s outstanding reputation for providing high-quality service enables higher-educational institutions, social-service organizations, associations, religious organizations, foundations and cultural organizations to serve their members, constituencies and communities more efficiently and effectively.
Over the past five years, there has been an increased focus on the governance of not-for-profit organizations nationwide. In 2008, the IRS implemented major revisions to Form 990, the form submitted by tax-exempt and not-for-profit organizations detailing their annual financial information. Among other changes, the expanded Form 990 now requires organizations to disclose governance policies, practices and procedures, making it imperative that boards understand the requirements and participate in review. The 2008 National Board Governance Survey for Not-for-Profit Organizations polls 652 CEOs, CFOs, board members and other senior officials of higher education institutions, trade and professional associations, social and human service organizations, religious organizations, museums, cultural organizations, health care organizations and foundations, gauging their perspective on issues from governance policies to executive compensation.
For the eighth year in a row, Grant Thornton has collaborated with The NonProfit Times to produce the “The NPT Top 100,” an annual study of America’s largest not-for-profit organizations and a strong indicator of how the nonprofit sector performed for the year.
The buzz swirling around the changes to the Form 990 results from a significant redesign in format and content. Learn about what’s changed and what’s new in the Not-for-Profit Special Tax Bulletin.
